The tomahawk was a type of one-handed axe, which was most effective when wielded in close combat. It was commonly used by Native Americans, as well as European colonists. It is still in use today, primarily by special operations groups, or by any outdoorsman, as it is both a useful tool and weapon.
The tomahawk could be used for stealth kills, melee combat, or to perform menial tasks; such as cutting a rope or traversing ziplines, in a similar manner to the Hookblade.
During the American Revolutionary War, the Mohawk Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton used various tomahawks in combat, particularly favoring one with a head resembling the Assassin insignia. He would often dual-wield the tomahawk alongside his Hidden Blade.
Trivia
- In the general store, the description of the Assassin Tomahawk stated that it once belonged to the first Assassin that came to the Colonial Americas, and was passed down through the generations.
- Connor's tomahawk was originally supposed to have more special functions as stated in a GameInformer interview.
- Despite the ability to use the tomahawk to traverse ziplines in Assassin's Creed III, only one zipline is present in-game.
- It was possible to craft a War Tomahawk if materials were available. The weapon was faster and dealt greater damage than Connor's "Assassin" tomahawk. Oddly, although it handled like any other sort of tomahawk, the War Tomahawk had the movement blur of a sword when it was used.
- Connor's Assassin Tomahawk was only available from stores, it could not be equipped inside the manor.
- Short Blades (Or Knives), have the same attacking animations while in combat as the tomahawks.
