Suyab (碎葉, Mandarin: Suìyè), was an ancient city that was located along the Silk Road in an area known to the Chinese as the Western Regions. The city sprang up in the 5th or 6th centuries as a trade hub for Sogdian merchants.[1] In the 8th century, it was situated within the borders of the Tang dynasty.[2]

Suyab was the birthplace of renowned Chinese poet Li Bai. The city also had a strong presence of the Hidden Ones, whose deeds may have inspired Li to consider becoming a xiake before he chose to become a government official and a poet.[2]
