The Self-Defense Mace was a mace owned by a Kytheran street vendor in the 5th century BCE.
History
Around 429 BCE, the street vendor ran a scam where he sold tablets for 1000 drachmae each to unwitting travellers promising that they were clues leading to "untold riches". In truth, the treasure chest the tablets led to was empty, put there only by the vendor as part of his scam. When the Spartan misthios Kassandra returned from the hunt to question the vendor, having been one of his victims, he accidentally revealed his lies, provoking her into beating him up. She took his Self-Defense Mace from him as a form of compensation.[1]
