Richard Prescott (1725 – 1788) was a British Army officer who held the rank of Lieutenant-General in the American Revolutionary War.

During the war, Prescott was captured in 1775 by the Continental Army[1] during the American invasion of Quebec, but was then released in exchange for General John Sullivan.[2] By 1777, Prescott was placed in command of 4,000 troops in the city of Newport, Rhode Island and based himself in the Loyalist Henry Overing's farm, where he was only protected by a few people.[1]

In July, Prescott became a target of the American general William Barton, who sought to exchange him for General Charles Lee,[3] the Continental Army's second-in-command who was captured following George Washington's retreat from the Battle of Long Island as part of the war's New York and New Jersey campaign.[4] With help of the Colonial Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton, the Americans were able to uncover Prescott's location and stage an infiltration operation. Prescott was cornered in his manor, with his guards either killed or captured. Left with little choice, Prescott was taken away[5] and eventually exchanged for Charles Lee.[2]
