Peisistratos (608 BCE – c. 527 BCE) was the tyrant of Athens who reigned between 561 BCE and 527 BCE. He was the father of Hippias, the grandfather of Peisistratos the Younger and a relative of the statesman Solon.
During his reign in 550 BCE, the construction of the Temple of Zeus Olympian was begun. However, the work was halted after the end of tyranny and the rise of democracy.[1] The Brauroneion on the Akropolis Sanctuary dedicated to Artemis Brauronia was also allegedly built by Peisistratos.[2]
