Lucy Thorne (1837 – 1868) was a British Templar and the second-in-command of Grand Master Crawford Starrick, operating in London during the Industrial Revolution. She studied multiple journals, books and tokens from which she extrapolated the locations of Pieces of Eden and set out to collect them.
Biography
Early life
Born to a successful tea merchant and the daughter of a minor noble house, Lucy grew up among relative luxury. A clever child, she received an education that should have ensured a successful marriage when she was older. Instead, the young Lucy immersed herself in books, particularly those that dealt with obscure religious knowledge, magic and occult philosophy.[1]
During her teenage years, her father's business began to struggle financially, with much of the money going towards paying off debts. Although, Lucy was encouraged to find a husband who could provide for her, she instead chose to work in her father's shop and gradually took on more of the management.[1]
In her spare time, Lucy continued researching occult objects such as the Shroud of Turin and began collecting rare manuscripts, frequently overspending at auctions to acquire them. At one such event, she outbid Crawford Starrick, who later tracked her down and attempted to buy the rare papers in her possession. Lucy refused his offer, but her enthusiasm for them convinced Starrick to introduce her to the Templar Order.[1]
Pieces of Eden
Brewster's Apple
- "Sir David. I will return tomorrow. If you have not unlocked the device's secrets, forget your dogs and horses. I will leave you to the wolves. Good day."
- ―Lucy to Brewster, 1868.[src]
In serving the Order, Lucy proved her worth and became Starrick's second-in-command, as well as the local specialist when it came to the Pieces of Eden. In 1868, she traveled to Croydon to speak with David Brewster, who was experimenting on an Apple of Eden in an effort to activate it.[2]
Pointing out that his abduction of workers would alert the authorities sooner or later, Lucy threatened him to achieve results quickly, or face the consequences, following which she departed. The artifact was destroyed in a lab explosion shortly thereafter, as a consequence of Brewster having pumped too much electricity into the Piece of Eden; however, Lucy had already set her sights on a new Precursor relic.[2]
Locating the Shroud
She then returned to London to oversee the transportation of a crate full of Assassin documents. However, two Assassins, Jacob and Evie Frye, stole the carriage carrying the crate when Thorne left it unattended. Thorne's men managed to recover the crate but not before the twin Assassins could escape with the crate's valuable cargo.[2]
Thorne later investigated Edward Kenway's mansion for any information leading to the Shroud of Eden. However, Evie and Henry Green infiltrated the mansion and found a hidden passage below the piano room. When Thorne discovered this, Green sealed the passageway, and by the time Thorne managed to force her way in, the Assassins had escaped. Lucy had traced the location of a potential lead to the vault containing the Shroud to the spire of St. Paul's Cathedral. However, she was beaten to the lead by Evie, which turns out to be a key in the shape of a necklace. After a brief tussle, Lucy escaped with the key in hand.[2]
Thorne later assured Starrick that she was close to finding the Shroud, listening as he played his piano in mourning for the death of his cousin Pearl at the hands of Jacob Frye.[2]
Believing that the key could open a chest in Queen Victoria's possession, Lucy Thorne forced her way into the Tower of London, replacing several Royal Guards with her men, and even imprisoning a Constable. Despite these precautions, however, she was assassinated by Evie Frye, though still refused the Assassin any knowledge of the Shroud's whereabouts with her dying breath.[2]
