The Bayou was a swampy area near New Orleans with little dry ground. It was inhabited by smugglers and other outcasts. Alligators were present in the area and had a notorious reputation for attacking unsuspecting prey from the atop the banks or beneath the murky waters. This made trees both a faster and a safer option for navigation to the French-African Assassin Aveline de Grandpré, who explored the area at some point in her life.
