Joyeuse was the legendary personal short sword used by the Frankish king Charlemagne. Made with a gold and gem-encrusted hilt, the blade was forged from the same metal that made Durendal, a sword wielded by the heroic paladin Roland. Adding to its fabled stature, the pommel of Joyeuse was further believed to contain the head of the Holy Lance, the spear that pierced Jesus of Nazareth as he was crucified.[1]
After Charlemagne's death, the blade was acquired by the remaining members of the local Hidden Ones. In spite of their formal withdrawal from the Roman Empire's province of Gaul in the mid 5th century, the few Frankish Hidden Ones recovered the scattered keys, locked the blade in a chest inside the Lutetia bureau beneath Paris, and then returned the keys to their hiding places around Francia.[2]
In 886, the Viking jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan found the bureau keys and claimed the weapon for herself while aiding Sigfred's efforts in laying siege to Paris.[2]
