Geoffroy Thérage was the royal executioner responsible for the alleged death of Jeanne d'Arc on 30 May 1431. He interrogated Jeanne while she was in captivity, notably inquiring about her habit of dressing in men's clothing.

Geoffroy was also an ancestor of the 21st-century Templar, Warren Vidic.

Biography

Execution of Jeanne d'Arc

On the fateful day of 30 May 1431, in the Old Marketplace of Rouen, Geofrroy was yelled at by impatient onlookers to carry on with the execution.[1] When he executed who he believed to be Jeanne d'Arc, he saw that Joan's Heart refused to burn, leading him to burn the body twice more, but still the artifact stayed whole. Frightened, he threw the girl's remains and the artifact into the Seine river, though the actions would come to haunt him, fearing he would be damned for killing a holy girl.[2]

Legacy

In 1981, his descendant Warren Vidic, a scientist who worked on Abstergo Industries' Animus Project, relived his memories, when he volunteered as his own subject for the Animus Project.[3]

Personality and traits

Geoffroy Thérage appeared as a formidable man, standing at a towering height of over six feet, which was considered quite imposing for his time. His robust build added to the intimidating presence he exuded, complemented by his dark hair and thick black beard.[4]

Geoffroy Thérage is a historical figure and character appearing in the "Subject Zero" audio file of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, where he is portrayed by Marcel Jeannin. His first appearance was in the 2016 novel Assassin's Creed: Heresy, written by Christie Golden.
