Critias (c. 460 BCE – 403 BCE) was an Athenian poet, philosopher, and politician who served as the leader of the Thirty Tyrants who ruled Athens after the Peloponnesian War.
During the Tyrant's rule, Critias often clashed against fellow member Theramenes over contrasting views on running the government. Following a dispute over Polemachus, Critias attempted to have Theramenes assassinated. Although this was thwarted with the help of the misthios Kassandra,[1] Critias later forced Theramenes to commit suicide via poison.[2]
