A big part of the Templar conspiracy is lying to the general public. (Actually, most governments and corporations lie to you constantly, the Templars aren't special in that regard!) But genetic memories used to be a way to find out the truth.
What makes Ego so scary is that the A.I. may have found a way to prevent desynchs by altering the user's recollection of events and filling a person's head with fake memory slop.
