Biography

Conflict with Nobunaga

In 1570, due to a multi-generational alliance with the Asakura clan, Nagamasa attacked his brother-in-law's forces as they attempted to besiege the Asakura's main stronghold at Kanagasaki Castle. Nobunaga was forced to retreat and felt personally betrayed by Nagamasa, whom he had considered part of the family.[2]

Nobunaga subsequently had Nagamasa executed and used his skull as an ornament for feasts. He also burned Odani Castle to the ground and killed the entire Azai clan.[4]

Legacy

In 1582, Kuma revealed his former allegiance to Azai Nagamasa to the samurai Yasuke.[3] Shortly after, Oichi met with Yasuke to honor her deceased brother and, in the process, told him of what Nobunaga had done to Nagamasa.[4]
