Arwe, also known by his epithets of the "serpent-king" and the "snake god",[1] is a character in Ethiopian mythology, where he is depicted as a tyrannical ruler who demands regular human and cattle sacrifices.[2] In the 9th century CE, the Aksumite general Endubis started a snake cult in the Church of Abuna Yemata, believing himself to be Arwe.[1]
