Toyotomi Hideyori (豊臣 秀頼; 1593 – 1615) was the son[1][2] and designated successor of the samurai Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In 1598, Hideyoshi died and a council of Five Elders (五大老) was formed to reign in Hideyori's place, since he was much too young to rule at five years old. These Elders were Ukita Hideie, Maeda Toshiie, Uesugi Kagekatsu, Mōri Terumoto, and Tokugawa Ieyasu, the latter of whom plotted to take the power for himself.
This conflict between Hideyori and Tokugawa would culminate in the Siege of Osaka in 1614, when the forces allied with Tokugawa gathered around Osaka Castle to attempt to force Hideyori and his allies to give up.
