The Merchant was a virtual representation of one of Ratonhnhaké:ton's genetic memories, relived by Desmond Miles in 2012 through the Animus.[1]

Connor was told to find "The Merchant" in New York and beat him to participate in the Boston Brawlers Tournament.

- Merchant: Another one. Alright, let's get it over with, then.
Won't get far with me on my feet.
