The sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) is a species of toothed whale and an aquatic mammal. They can be found worldwide in most seas, migrating seasonally.
History[edit | edit source]
During the Peloponnesian War, the Spartan misthios Kassandra sometimes encountered sperm whales whilst aboard the Adrestia on the Aegean Sea.[1]
In the 9th century, sperm whales were fairly common in the seas of Norway, being a regular target for whaling. The Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir sometimes encountered these creatures in the fjords while on her travels aboard her longship, the Sea-Chariot. Several whaling stations also existed in England, including Port Walton.[2]
During the early 18th century, the pirate Edward Kenway encountered a white sperm whale fighting a giant squid near the wreck of the Antocha. Edward also encountered several other white sperm whales, which he hunted for their rare skin.[3] In December 1716, the pirate Alonzo Batilla hunted a white sperm whale in the Arctic Ocean, which had been terrorizing the native Inuit.[4] During the Seven Years' War, the Templar Shay Cormac similarly hunted sperm whales for their skin, which he used to craft new equipment for himself.[5]
