Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of the regions of Italy.

History[edit | edit source]

The Ionians, one of the main four Greek tribes, founded several colonies in Sicily and South Italy.[1] During the Peloponnesian War, Alkibiades convinced Athens to send a military expedition to Sicily, which was disastrous for the Athenians, who lost their entire expeditionary force, signaling the beginning of the end of Athens' power.[2]

In the 1st century BCE, Sicily was a part of the Roman Republic and the home of Apollodorus before he left for Alexandria as a young man.[3][4]

In the early 16th century, the Italian Templar Cesare Borgia planned on using Leonardo da Vinci's tank as the centerpiece of a surprise attack on Sicily, though his plans were thwarted by the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze, who destroyed the tank and its blueprints.[5]
