Nelson's Column is a monument in Trafalgar Square in London, England, dedicated to Admiral Horatio Nelson for his deeds during the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. Initially said to be 169 feet (51.6 meters) tall, it was discovered to be only 155 feet (47 meters) in 2006.
History[edit | edit source]
The column was built in 1843, costing £47,000 — over £3 million in modern currency — with an 18 feet statue of Nelson atop facing the Houses of Parliament. The bottom of the column, commissioned in 1858 and sculpted by Sir Edwin Landseer, featured the famous battles fought by Nelson: the Battle of Cape St. Vincent, the Battle of the Nile, the Battle of Copenhagen, and the Battle of Trafalgar in which he was mortally wounded.[1]
