The Nachzehrer Cellar was a tavern in Vienna, Austria.

History[edit | edit source]

In 1853, Simeon Price, using the alias "Jack Straw," went to the tavern to find János Libényi and tell him the news of Karl Mayr's death. Meeting with a local butcher, Joseph Ettenreich, Simeon was later met by János, who started to complain about the Emperor's lies regarding the Hungarian rebels and how Mayr was going to tear down his shop for a road. When Price revealed that Mayr has died by his hands, Libényi rejoiced and offered to pay for another round of drinks. Libényi then promised Straw that he would repay the favor.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

The word "Nachzehrer" comes from German fables and loosely translates to "night-consumer", referring to a type of revenant or vampire believed to be able to drag the living after it into death.[2]
