Lugdunum was the capital city of Roman Gaul during the era of the Roman Empire, situated in modern-day Lyon, France. The city was home to a branch of the Hidden Ones known as the Liberalis Circulum, including the 3rd-century Hidden One Aquilus and his father Lucius.
History[edit | edit source]
In 259 CE, following his confrontation with General Gracchus, Aquilus traveled back to his hometown to bring the Ankh to his father. Upon his arrival, he found his father in good health, and met a family friend, Senator Caïus Fulvus Vultur. Aquilus almost immediately set out to find the person responsible for his betrayal, and so he sought out Faustinus, the bishop of Lugdunum. After a brief interrogation, Faustinus revealed Vultur to be his accomplice and was killed by Aquilus while attempting to flee.[1]
When Aquilus returned to his house, he found Lucius dead and the Ankh stolen. Seeking to avenge his father and recover the Ankh, Aquilus was told by one of the maids that Vultur had fled the city, prompting the Hidden One to travel to Rome to hunt down the senator, who was secretly a member of the Order of the Ancients.[1]
Not long after, the Alemanni moved in on Lugdunum, though their commander, Aquilus' cousin Accipiter, was hesitant to plunder the city because of the Hidden Ones' interests. Instead of plundering it, a deal was made with the Prefect of Lugdunum. The city paid a large sum of gold to keep the Alemanni from invading the city, which made an easy victory for the latter.[2]
