Luca di Maso degli Albizzi (1382 – 1458) was a member of the House of Albizzi, a prominent banking family in Florence.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Prior to Cosimo de' Medici's rise to power, the House of Albizzi (under Luca's father Maso and later his brother Rinaldo) had been the ruling family in Florence. Worried about Cosimo's rising influence, the Albizzi had him imprisoned in the Palazzo della Signoria. Gaining influence behind the scenes, Cosimo rose to power in 1434 and exiled the entire Albizzi family except for Luca, who had been loyal to him.[1][2]

Luca subsequently joined the Signoria, the ruling body of Florence, and succeeded Cosimo's old friend Ilario Auditore as Gonfaloniere in 1441.[1][2]
