Kim Jung Gi (1975 – 2022) was a South Korean artist and writer.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Early life[edit | edit source]
Kim Jung Gi was born in 1975 in the town of Goyang-Si, in the Kyongki-Do province of South Korea. By the age of 19, he was an aspiring artist and attended a Fine Arts School, majoring in Art and Design. He later attended Dong-eui University in Busan for three years and also performed two years of compulsory service in the South Korean army as a part of the Special Forces Unit.[1]
In 2003, he published his first story Funny Funny in Young Jump magazine. He continued writing short stories which led to him teaching classes for manhwa at various private schools and universities. From 2008 to 2010, he collaborated with Seung-Jin Park to create the six volume manhwa Tiger the Long Tail. Later that year and again in 2013, Jung Gi illustrated two of French author Bernard Werber's novels, Paradise and Third Humanity.[1]

In July 2020, following Ubisoft's first Ubisoft Forward presentation where the release date of the next Assassin's Creed installment Assassin's Creed: Valhalla was announced, a standalone novel was also announced written by Matthew J. Kirby and with Kim Jung Gi drawing the cover art. The cover art was to be posted on Jung Gi's Instagram account later that month,[2] but was delayed until October. When it was finally uploaded on 7 October, the description revealed that Jung Gi drew the art, while another Korean artist Pyeongjun Park colored it.[3] A time-lapse video of Jung Gi drawing the cover was uploaded to the Assassin's Creed UK twitter accounts the same day.[4]
Death[edit | edit source]
Kim Jung Gi passed away in Paris on 3 October 2022,[5] after experiencing chest pains. It was later revealed that cause of death was a sudden heart attack.[6]
