Hogonji Temple

Hogonji Temple (寶嚴寺) is a Buddhist temple on Chikubushima island in Lake Biwa, dedicated to the goddess Benzaiten[1]

History[edit | edit source]

In 1582, Lady Oichi and her bodyguard Kuma held a meeting at the temple, where she gave her last instructions to her followers as a member of the Shinbakufu. Just as the meeting ended, Oichi was confronted by the samurai Yasuke and his ally Fujibayashi Naoe, who expressed shock and anger at her identity.[2]

After a heated conversation where Oichi claimed that she had been tricked into joining the group, Naoe and Yasuke ultimately agreed to spare Oichi's life. The next morning, Yasuke visited Oichi at the temple, asking why she had not told him about her predicament earlier so that he could have helped her. Oichi claimed that Yasuke had already done more than enough and gave him her late brother's wakizashi before vowing to meditate and find ways to make up for her mistakes.[2]
