Hinotani Shrine

The Hinotani Shrine was a Shinto shrine in the Nabari Wilds region of Iga Province, Japan.

History[edit | edit source]

In 1582, the Kakushiba ikki member and shinobi Fujibayashi Naoe arrived at the shrine after finding a note from her "auntie" Matsu mentioning her last trek there. Seeing Matsu, Naoe heard her prayers before announcing herself. Emotional, Matsu hugged Naoe and they began to discuss all that had transpired since they had last seen each other.[1]

Naoe soon offered to help Matsu find a new home, as her previous house had been destroyed in the Tenshō Iga War, and the latter mentioned a cabin where she had spent her youth. Concerned about the outlaws in the nearby woods, Naoe went to deal with them while Matsu remained at the shrine.[1]

Naoe later returned to escort Matsu after saving two travelers, Yoshiharu and his granddaughter Murasaki, from a killer at the cabin.[2][3] When Naoe mentioned that Murasaki was injured, Matsu insisted that Naoe find maggots to treat the girl's wounds while she ventured to the cabin alone.[2]
