Hervor was a former shieldmaiden and archer in Niflheimr.

Biography[edit | edit source]

At some point after her death, Hervor was experimented on by Hel's orders. As a result, she was bisected into parts of herself but was able to revive herself. Her body was left in pieces within a cave in Kaldstad. Fortunately, she was found by the Æsir lord Havi, who came to find and revive his son Baldr from Hel. Havi entered the cave and activated a grand sword in the middle of the cave. Immediately, the torso and legs of Hervor emerged and began to fight Havi. After the first fight, Havi bested and killed the half-warrior.[1]

The next time he visited the cave, Havi activated the sword again and the body started to regain her arms and an axe. Havi bested her again. During another run, Havi activated the sword again and Hervor appeared with a shield and a spear. However, she lost again. On their fourth meeting, Hervor was reanimated again and fought Havi with more ferocity. Upon her fourth loss, she became fully reconfigured. Talking with Havi, she admitted that she forgot who she was but thanked him for her release before leaving.[1]

In subsequent times in any of the regions, Havi met her again as she remembered her name to be Hervor. She asked Havi for any arrows to hunt, to which Havi gave. In return, she aided Havi in combat against any of his opposition.[2]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Hervor is a character first introduced in The Forgotten Saga, a downloadable expansion released in August 2022 for the 2020 video game Assassin's Creed: Valhalla.

Hervor shares her name with two shieldmaidens that both appear in the legendary saga Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks which is a part of the Tyrfing Cycle. The first Hervor challanged her father's spirit to claim the legendary sword Tyrfing and the second Hervor was the granddaughter of the first and fell in battle against the Huns. The name may be a coincidence or the character is supposed to represent either of these legendary women. The first Hervor not having a known death suggests she may have ended up in Hel unlike her daughter, who died in battle and would have entered Valhalla.[3]
