Grapes are a type of fruit best known as the source of wine.
History[edit | edit source]
In Greek mythology, grapes were dedicated to the god Dionysos. In the 5th century BCE, grapes were especially plentiful on Naxos Island, which was famous enough for them to use the image of grapes on its banner and its coinage.[1]
During the Renaissance, the Mentor of the Italian Assassins, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, retired to spend the last years of his life in a villa, tending to his grapes with his wife Sofia Sartor and their children, Marcello and Flavia.[2]
During the 18th century, the Italian diplomat Ruggiero Ferraro considered Sangiovese to be the finest grape in the world.[3]
