From Hell was a virtual representation of one of Evie Frye's genetic memories, relived by a Helix initiate through the Helix Navigator.
Description[edit | edit source]
Arthur Weaversbrook asks Evie Frye to make sure one of the writers of so-called Ripper Letters isn't actually Jack the Ripper.
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
- Arthur Weaversbrook: Miss Frye... I have helped spread the Ripper's terror through my newspapers. I want to make amends for my part in forging this monster's legend.
The central newspaper agency has received another 'Ripper' letter. Handwriting experts have identified a suspect this time... We must be sure it is not him.
Miss Frye, it's about a new Ripper letter. I hope it's nothing but a hoax, but we cannot afford to ignore it.
Evie left Arthur, and located the suspect. She tailed him through the borough to a place where he stopped to brag to his friends.
- Suspect: Can you believe it! The front page of London's biggest newspaper... I fooled those rozzers, ha ha ha!
Evie frightened the man, and then caught him.
- Suspect: I was just having a lark! Wanted to see if I could get away with it... I don't know who the Ripper is, but it ain't me, ask me wife...
Evie let the man go, and he fled.
Outcome[edit | edit source]
Evie learned the truth behind the letter, earning her Arthur's gratitude.
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
Despite being the first mission in the Ripper Letter sequence, the name of this memory is anachronistic, as the "From Hell" letter was the last of the missives purportedly sent by Jack. It was postmarked 15 October 1888 and received by chairman George Lusk of the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee on the following day.
