The interior of Fort George

Fort George was a military location in southern New York City. It was known by various names through its lifetime, including Fort Amsterdam, Fort James, Fort William, and Fort Anne; the latter three were names of English and British monarchs.

History[edit | edit source]

The fort was built in 1625 by the Dutch to protect their settlement of New Amsterdam. By the time it became a British property during the 18th century, the fort had went through numerous name changes before finally settling with Fort George.[1]

At some point prior to the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War, the fort fell into the hands of the Colonial Rite of the Templar Order and served as their headquarters throughout the conflict.[2]

In 1781, the fort was attacked by several French warships acting under the orders of Ratonhnhaké:ton, who sought to use the bombardment as a diversion for his assassination of Charles Lee. However, Lee had left and Connor was forced to fight and kill his father, Haytham Kenway, instead.[2][3]

At the end of the war, the fort was torn down, likely due to its name being the name of King George III.[1]

Alternate timeline[edit | edit source]

In an alternate timeline, the fort was occupied by King Washington's troops, who built a gunpowder supply tower on the southwest corner of the fort. Ratonhnhaké:ton and Thomas Jefferson's spy Godfrey planted and detonated powder kegs at the tower's base, toppling it and signalling the start of Jefferson's attack on Washington's palace.[4]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

In The Tyranny of King Washington, the fort can be accessed at any time by climbing up a flag pole on the western tower and then back ejecting onto the courtyard. A Lucid Memory Fragment can be found in the fort next to Haytham's hat and cloak.
