Sadly, cannot place his death more accurately than "9th century" since comic does not seem to give date for events

Ecbert

Ecbert was a monk at Readingum Abbey in the late 9th century. He was the older brother to Edward.[1]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Ecbert and Edward were sent to Readingum Abbey by their family. While Edward became a copyist monk, Ecbert eventually became the leader of the congregation. One day, Ecbert received a number of scrolls containing a script he could not decipher.[1] A Viking attack to the abbey helmed by Eivor Varinsdottir led to his brother's kidnapping and to the building burning[2] while Ecbert attempted to retrieve the odd scrolls. After seeing his brother being taken, Ecbert ventured away from Readingum in search for help, finding his way to King Alfred the Great, who he hoped would pay a ransom in exchange for information about the scrolls. Alfred instead sent him to infiltrate the source of the scrolls: an artifact in the hands of Saint Columba the Reborn's sect in Loch Ness.[1]

Edward, along with Niels Gunnarsson and Adelaïde, managed to locate the sect's headquarters and enter it unnoticed. When Ecbert noticed Edward, he took his brother to his room so they could talk and update each other on what had happened since the attack at Readingum Abbey. Edward attempted to convince Ecbert to return to the Abbey, but Ecbert wished to use the artefact himself so that he could make their family, the Church, stronger than ever, seeing as how the sect had managed to convert not only Anglo-Saxons, but also the Picts and the Vikings.[1]

After an altercation with the members of the sect, Adelaïde started a mechanism that flooded the headquarters. As the group left, Adelaïde mentioned that her Order would be able to better use the artifact, and Ecbert attempted to kill her by throwing a dagger at her. However, she caught the blade and threw it back into his chest, instantly killing him.[1]
