Deptford is an area on the south bank of the River Thames, in south-east London, England.

History[edit | edit source]

In the mid-1880s a private company purchased a number of prison hulks along with the ruins of an abandoned garrison for unknown purposes.[1]

In 1888, the Deptford prison hulks were guarded by Chief Warder John Billingsworth, a sympathizer and underling of Jack the Ripper, who was responsible for maintaining Jack's prisoners.[2] In November of that year, the Assassin Evie Frye sailed downriver to Deptford, killed Billingsworth, alerted the Metropolitan Police Service,[3] and liberated the hostages Jack was using to maintain his control over London's wealthy elite.[4]

Following Evie's departure, Jack returned to Deptford to eliminate any evidence and witnesses that may have compromised the Assassins and, most importantly, himself.[4]
