The Democratic Party is one of two of the current political parties in the United States of America. Its main opponent is the Republican Party.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
In July 1863, some members of the Democratic Party were identified as Copperhead Democrats, who were against the Civil War and sought peace with the Confederate States. In New York City, riots occurred due to President Abraham Lincoln's draft to fight for the Union, which caused discord among the New York citizens. However, fellow Democrat, boss of Tammany Hall, and secret Templar Grand Master William M. Tweed worked with his fellow Templars Peter B. Sweeny, A. Oakey Hall, and Richard B. Connolly to sustain and control the aftermath of the riots.[2]
Tweed secretly enlisted the help of gangs like the Bowery Boys, Roach Guards, and Daybreak Boys to sow chaos within the riots. Thus, the Templars could achieve control under the guise of the Democratic Party's influence once the riots were suppressed.[2] Tweed also tasked his agent, the Master Templar Cudgel Cormac, to follow the Assassin Varius and recover a rumored Piece of Eden kept in the Astor House.[3] Ultimately, the Templars' plan failed, and Tweed was later arrested for corruption in 1871.[4]
