The Newgate Jail, also known as Newgate Prison, was a prison in London, England which operated from 1188 to 1902.[1] Quite famous during its operation, Newgate received further attention as the setting for John Gay's 1728 The Beggar's Opera, with the main characters being its prisoners.[2]
History[edit | edit source]
In 1696, after the attempted theft of a necklace, Jack Oliver was arrested and placed into Newgate. There, he was visited by Isaac Newton and Omar Khaled.[3] Khaled interrogated Oliver, and learned he had been extorted into the deed, the necklace in exchange for his daughter's life.[4]
