Beonton

Beonton was Halfdan Ragnarsson's pet dog.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 876, Beonton aided his owner and Eivor Varinsdottir in confirming Halfdan's suspicions about traitors in his ranks. After finding his scout Olav dead, Halfdan had Beonton follow the murderers' scents. Arriving at the Petuaria Ruins, Beonton led Eivor and Halfdan to investigate and find Ulf and his men, who had gathered riches for themselves. Despite Ulf's protests that his men were owed the treasure as war spoils and had accidentally killed Olav after mistaking him for a thief, Halfdan would not hear it and slew the group for what he deemed as treason.[1]

Following this, Beonton joined Halfdan in Jorvik's Royal Hall and sat beside the throne when Halfdan was crowned King of Northumbria and decided to make amends with his longtime friend, Faravid.[2] Sometime after Halfdan's coronation, Beonton accompanied his owner to Picheringa, where Halfdan sought to be alone to mourn the loss of his friends and family over the years since the Viking expansion began in England.[3]

Before Halfdan could stop him, Beonton ran off with his war hammer Orthstirr. However, the hound became lost in the Dalby Forest and was soon surrounded by three wolves, only for Eivor to come to his rescue. Once they defeated the wild creatures, they left with the weapon to meet Halfdan at Scarborough, where Eivor convinced him to continue ruling as Jorvik's king. As Beonton ran up to be by his owner's side, Halfdan cheered up and agreed to return to Jorvik.[3]
