Scorpion Reef is a reef in the Gulf of Mexico containing a small group of islands, located near the Yucatán Peninsula.
The reef claimed the lives of many shipwrecked sailors while offering pirates a refuge from the storms and from the law.
In 1716, the novice pirate captain Alonzo Batilla stole a schooner called the Wanderer with the help of his fellow pirate Olivier Levasseur. The former then proceeded to plunder a Royal Navy brig with his new vessel, and undertook various races and deliveries in the area.
