Pivots were a series of virus-generated code segments found within the Animus, which were mainly used to hack into the virtual machine's core programming, allowing a user to upload their own Animus sessions of Ratonhnhaké:ton's genetic memories, as well as uploading them to the Abstergo Cloud.[1]
In late 2012, an Abstergo Industries engineer used a worm virus to hack the Animus 3.0, allowing for the upload of Desmond Miles' genetic memories to the Abstergo servers. However, the virus failed, resulting in two pivots located in the already rendered city of Boston. The user then had to locate the other ten pivots by triangulating their coordinates, through using the collected pivots to pinpoint the locations of remaining ones.[1]
After collecting all twelve pivots, Desmond's genetic memories were successfully uploaded to the Cloud, allowing multiple Abstergo employees to access them,[1] specifically the memories of Edward Kenway during the Golden Age of Piracy.[2]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
The pivots were a set of collectibles included in the postgame of Assassin's Creed III. For each one found a cheat would unlock within the Animus and collecting them all resulted in the achievement "Head in the Cloud". However, this aspect of the game was removed in Assassin's Creed III Remastered, with the achievement likewise removed while all the cheats were automatically unlocked by completing the main storyline.
The origami unicorn asset used for the pivots is a reference to the film Blade Runner.
