In Norse mythology, the dragon Níðhǫggr was said to gnaw on the roots of Yggdrasil it lived between and only speak with the squirrel Ratatoskr, who reportedly would run along the tree between Níðhǫggr and the eagle at the top to convey gossip and other messages.[4] The dwarf Fafnir also turned into a dragon to covetously guard the cursed ring Andvaranaut and his mountain of gold[5] until the hero Sigurd stabbed him from behind and killed him.[6]

In 873, the Raven Clan Viking Eivor Varinsdottir attended initial peace talks in Sciropscire between the Britons under the Welsh king Rhodri the Great and Norse under Ivarr the Boneless. At the conference, Rhodri insulted Ivarr and boasted that his seers had foretold only a dragon would kill him.[7] After Eivor successfully arranged for peace through Rhodri's wife Angharad ferch Meurig,[8] a warmongering Ivarr used a Brittonic knife with a dragon head shaped hilt to murder his ward Ceolbert,[9] son of the new Mercian king Ceolwulf II,[10] then used the blade to frame the Britons and justify restarting the war effort.[8] Inspired by Rhodri's declaration, Ivarr had a blue dragon tattooed on the left side of his face in the hours before attacking Caustow Castle.[9] Later that century, Eivor met Erik Loyalskull, a member of Ragnar Lothbrok's Lost Drengir who carried the spear Fafnir's Fang, which was named for the slain dragon.[11]

In the early 18th century, the pirate Alonzo Batilla bought the brig Dragon and collected a holy figurine of a Chinese dragon.[3] In 1753, the Colonial Rite of the Templar Order regularly held their meetings at the Green Dragon Tavern in northern Boston.[12] Decades later during the French Revolution, the Parisian Assassin Arno Dorian acquired a rifle named The Iron Dragon.[13]

In 1868, the British Assassin twins Evie and Jacob Frye were gifted the Flame Dragon and Jade Dragon cane-swords from their London underworld contact Robert Topping, both of which had handles sculpted in the shape of Chinese dragons.[14]
