The Kingdom of Navarre (Basque: Nafarroa; Spanish: Navarra) was a Basque kingdom that occupied lands on either side of the western Pyrenees, along the Atlantic coast between present-day Spain and France.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

By the early 16th century, the kingdom was ruled jointly by Queen Catherine and her husband John III, both of whom belonged to French noble families from neighbouring Gascony. In 1507, John sent his brother-in-law Cesare Borgia to retake the Viana Castle from the Count of Lerin and the Castilians aiding him.[2] The siege would end in a Navarrese defeat, with the assassination of Cesare by Ezio Auditore.[3]
