Tobias "Deadman" Smith was born near the settlement of Bridgetown in Barbados. He was orphaned at a young ande and spent a tumultuous and difficult childhood in poverty, as a beggar. When still a teenager, Smith was grabbed one night while sleeping, and pressganged to serve the British Navy during the War of Spanish Succession. After some time suffering through the war, he was taken by pirates when the ship he was on was attacked.

The pirates were less cruel than his former masters, and taught Smith to fight. Due to his slight build from constant malnourishment while growing, he was mediocre at close quarters combat. However, he had an immediate affinity for big weaponry and became a deadly and effective Master Gunner.

Eventually Smith's ship was captured by the British. Rather than be tried and hung with the rest of his crew, he was imprisoned and tortured by sadistic British Commander Cyrus. Smith survived weeks of misery at the hands of Cyrus, before being nailed inside a box and shipped off to serve as Master Gunner for British pirate hunter Lieutenant Robert Maynard.

However, before the ship could reach its destination it was attacked by the pirate Edward Kenway, and Smith was rescued. He and Kenway later joined forces to take revenge on Cyrus.

Smith and Kenway eventually returned to his home on Crooked Island, in hopes of reuniting Smith with his wife. There they discovered a British raiding party conducting a slaving run, herding men and women aboard their ships. Smith and Kenway routed the British, sending them fleeing. Upon reaching Smith's house they found the place in ruins and his wife long since deceased. Her fate confirmed, Smith solemnly asked Edward to bury him next to her grave when he died.

Back at Great Inagua, Smith applied his extensive knowledge of guns to build new, experimental mortars for Edward's Jackdaw. With word of the British raiding party still in the waters off Crooked Island, Smith and Kenway had the perfect targets with which to blood their new weapons. Using the mortars they defeated multiple waves of British gunships.

Having proven his place amongst the crew, Smith was encouraged to choose a new nickname for himself. However, he had taken a grim liking to the name given him [sic] by the crew, and chose to continue to be known as Deadman.
