Vendredi (died 1751) was a Maroon and a member of the Saint-Domingue Brotherhood of Assassins under the leadership of François Mackandal. In 1751, he was tasked with exploring an Isu Temple in Haiti.
Biography[edit | edit source]
On 21 November 1751, Vendredi entered a cavern near Port-au-Prince and unwittingly triggered a defense mechanism which caused an earthquake, destroying Port-au-Prince and the surrounding area. As he came running out of the crevice, his legs were crushed under falling debris. The Master Templar Lawrence Washington, who had followed the Assassin to the cave, offered to free him in exchange for Mackandal's location. Vendredi agreed, but Washington instead slit the Assassin's throat, ending his life.[1]
As Vendredi's body was not found, the Assassins never discovered his fate or the true cause of the earthquake. However, Babatunde Josèphe correctly suspected that Vendredi had been killed;[2] despite this, when Babatunde's father Adéwalé later reported the events in Port-au-Prince to Achilles Davenport, the Mentor of the Colonial Assassins, he could only affirm that Vendredi was missing.[3]
