Lake Biwa (琵琶湖, Biwa-ko) is the largest lake in Japan, located in Shiga Prefecture near Kyoto. It is one of the oldest lakes in the world and an important source of water for the Kansai region.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
In 1575, after the defeat of the Azai-Asakura alliance,[2] Akechi Mitsuhide was awarded Sakamoto Castle by his lord Oda Nobunaga. The castle itself was situated fairly close to the lake.[3]
In 1582, Yasuke escorted his former lord's sister Oichi on a boat across the lake to Shirahige Shrine. Along the way, Oichi narrated a legend about the lake involving Fujiwara no Hidesato, the Ōmukade, and the Dragon King.[4]
