Deptford is an area on the south bank of the River Thames, in south-east London, England.

The ports of Deptford were used to hold a number of decommissioned Royal Navy warships that were converted into prison hulks. The conditions on these ships were extremely poor, and few prisoners managed to escape. Between the 18th and 19th centuries, no less than 40 ships were converted into prison hulks.[1]
In the mid-1880s, a private company purchased a number of prison hulks, along with the ruins of an abandoned garrison for unknown purposes.[1] By 1888, the Deptford hulks were overseen by Chief Warder John Billingsworth, a sympathizer and underling of Jack the Ripper, who was responsible for maintaining Jack's prisoners.[2]
In November of that year, the Assassin Evie Frye sailed downriver to Deptford, killed Billingsworth, alerted the Metropolitan Police Service,[3] and liberated the hostages Jack was using to maintain his control over London's wealthy elite. Following Evie's departure, Jack returned to Deptford to eliminate any evidence and witnesses that may have compromised the Assassins and, most importantly, himself.[4]
