Vasco da Gama (c. 1460 – 1524) was a Portuguese explorer and the commander of the first ships to sail directly from Europe to India. Because of this journey, he was appointed Viceroy of India and also Admiral of the seas of Persia, Arabia, and India.[1]

In 1497, Vasco da Gama, working for the Portuguese Crown, traveled to India, becoming the first European to arrive there by sea.[2]
In 1503, after Pedro Álvares Cabral's failure to eliminate the Indian Assassins, King Manuel I of Portugal, influenced by the Borgia and the Templars, sent Vasco with an army of 800 men to Calicut. Da Gama was to complete what Cabral had failed, and used the guise of the expulsion of all Muslims from the city to create chaos and stir up the Brotherhood. His fleet bombarded Calicut, killing hundreds,[3][4] but the captains sent to take control of the area were either killed or driven from the city, crippling the Portuguese efforts to seize Calicut.[5][6]
Vasco also wrote a personal diary at some point in his life. One of the pages ended up in the possession of Peter Beckford during the Golden Age of Piracy and was looted by Edward Kenway.[7]
