'''Shōryū-ji Castle''' (勝龍寺城) is a castle in {{Wiki|Kyoto Prefecture}}, [[Japan]]. During the [[Sengoku period]], it was situated in [[Shoryuji]] in the [[Yamashiro]] province.

==History==
In 1568, [[Oda Nobunaga]], along with [[Ashikaga Yoshiaki]], conquered [[Kyoto]] from the {{Wiki|Miyoshi clan}}, starting with Shōryū-ji Castle. After its conquest, Nobunaga entrusted the castle to [[Hosokawa Fujitaka]], who rebuilt its defenses in 1571. In 1578, the castle served as the honeymoon residence between Fujitaka's son [[Hosokawa Tadaoki]] and [[Hosokawa Tama|Akechi Tama]], daughter of [[Akechi Mitsuhide]]. In 1581, the Hosokawa's moved from the castle to [[Miyazu Castle]] in Miyazu.<ref name="Database">''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]]'' – [[Database: Shoryu-ji]]</ref> 

On 21 June 1582, the [[Iga]]n ''[[ninja|kunoichi]]'' [[Fujibayashi Naoe]] met with Mitsuhide and his son-in-law [[Ise Sadaoki]] at the village outside the castle for their [[Honnō-ji incident|planned ambush]] on Nobunaga at [[Honnō-ji]]. Unknown to Naoe, both Mitsuhide and Sadaoki were part of a secret organization called the [[Shinbakufu]] and tricked Naoe into believing Nobunaga was its leader.<ref name="Temple of the Horseman">''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]]'' – [[Temple of the Horseman]]</ref> Following the death of Nobunaga, Mitsuhide quickly conquered the castle and used it for his base of operations for his claim to lead Japan.<ref name="Database"/> 

However, Mitsuhide remained the only active member of the Shinbakufu due to the interference of the [[Japanese Brotherhood of Assassins|Kakushiba ''ikki'']] members Naoe and [[Yasuke]].<ref name="Topple the Traitor">''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]]'' – [[Topple the Traitor]]</ref> Within a short amount of time, [[Toyotomi Hideyoshi|Hashiba Hideyoshi]] planned to attack Mitsuhide at his castle.<ref name="The Peasant Who Would Be King">''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]]'' – [[The Peasant Who Would Be King]]</ref> Joining Hideyoshi in his [[Battle of Yamazaki|siege]] of the castle, Naoe and Yasuke fought through the [[Akechi]] soldiers and made their way to confront Mitsuhide. Yet, Mitsuhide ran from the castle, leaving his men to fend off Naoe and Yasuke, but the pair managed to defeat the warriors and chased after Mitsuhide.<ref name="Topple the Traitor"/> 

At some point, Naoe and Yasuke returned to the castle, eliminated three of its ''{{Wiki|ja:侍大将|samurai daisho}}'', looted the [[Yurei-Walker Robes]] from its [[treasure chest]], climbed atop the ''tenshu'' to [[Viewpoint|survey]] the land,<ref name="ACSH">''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]]''</ref> and collected one of [[Kanō Eitoku]]'s paintings to return to him in Kyoto.<ref name="Art Collector">''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]]'' – [[Art Collector]]</ref> After Hideyoshi won the battle, he claimed the castle. After some time, the castle was mainly abandoned except for some time in the 17th century.<ref name="Database"/>
