Abusing report function[edit source]

Please do not report moderation messages by administrators and moderators. This constitutes an abuse of reporting. I understand that my comment might have sounded unduly harsh, perhaps even rude, to you, but I could find no other way to describe your comments but that they were "barely incoherent". Coherence is a quality of writing and communication, and blocks of poorly structured paragraphs of run-on sentences with haphazard punctuation can actually result in incoherent messages. It was not my intent to offend, but I could think of no other way of earnestly explaining the issue without understating it. Sol Pacificus(Cyfiero) 10:42, 18 November 2022 (UTC)

RE:Good and bad faith[edit source]

Regarding this thread, I assume you have read the further exchange between us that I have deleted, but I wish to clarify what I meant by bad faith.

In formal logic, my statement "Actually the Lisbon earthquake was caused by Shay" is a claim that should be taken at face value and understood exactly as what it says. It has a truth value, and that truth value depends on whether or not Shay was a causal agent of the earthquake. Factually, Shay was a causal agent because we witness in "Kyrie Eleison" that he triggers the earthquake. You infer that I was implying the Assassins or Achilles were not also complicit in the earthquake, and therefore, I am "scapegoating" Shay and that I am "biased". The inference is what I mean by bad faith. Bad faith is when one assigns negative intent and meaning beyond what is literally given and then, in light of one's suspicions, refusing to give the benefit of the doubt when the other party clarifies themselves.

I understand why you inferred what you did since it seemed that my comment was trying to refute "the Lisbon earthquake in 1755 that Achilles caused", and since you are probably aware of my general position. However, I clarified to you my actual intent and meaning, which is that I was rhetorically highlighting Shay's agency that tends to be ignored. It was not my intent or meaning that Achilles did not also cause the earthquake; my intent and meaning was to call attention to how Shay being also a causal agent tends to be glossed over (and admittedly therefore I was also trying to call attention to a common bias). You might distrust my explanation here, but hammering at it based on that distrust is what I mean by bad faith. For productive debates, we have to take one another's explanations at their word and also take statements at face value in spite of what private misgivings we may have.

You added a further comment that I should also delete the last comment I have retained to show "good faith" and that I am not just deleting those I disagree with. The reason why I kept that comment is because it explains to everyone that debates about Shay Cormac has already occurred frequently in the past, complete with four examples, and it would not be productive to keep rehashing them here.

Finally, as for whether or not I am deleting comments that just disagree with me, the problem is that as a moderator, I also have to keep debates from getting out-of-hand when they've become circular, devolved into argumentum ad hominem, and have derailed the thread. When you responded to my explanation by doubling down and accusing me of bias and then I admittedly also called out your bias in turn, the debate had devolved. I believe the responsible thing then is to stop it, especially when we want to leave space for others to continue the discussion.

But I will acknowledge one thing which is that perhaps I am creating ambiguity about my intentions by contributing to discussions and moderating at the same time. So that is something I will be reflecting more on in the future. At the same time, I will ask that you please be more mindful about what bad faith means as well.
