All the stories is conected somehow in the games(and other media) and with the modern part and the Animus it connects easy.

You're right the Anumis is not needed 100%, but it's allways going to be there eks: AC3:Liberation,AC Discovery, AC Bloodlines and AC Altair's Chronicles.
