The combat basics may have good but the combat system itself was entirely flawed because even advanced players would have difficulty countering with the hidden blade. In Assassin's Creed 2, the timing is somewhat improved but countering is still as complicated as the first game. While counterattacking with the hidden blade became easier in the later games; Assassin's Creed Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed Revelations, the combat system was much better because of the new kill combos they introduced. Killing streaks (sprees) made it easier to dispose of a large number of guards. If you've tried the VR, it is very DIFFICULT to perform well in Flawless All Weapons, even as an advanced player I perform poorly in not getting hit. I do get HIT in combat, but I won't DIE.... Getting hit in battle is NATURAL. The fact that they reintroduced this in Assassin's Creed 3 shows a high degree of realism.
