This was the guy you've played through ACB/ACR multiplayer, shown in the Abstergo story there. Everyone assumed he was silent because "oooh, it's the player character", until they gave him a name and a background through Initiates.

And I suspect it'll eventually happen to the silent mook we play in the modern parts of Black Flag.
