Indeed, the Assassins and Templars both fail to understand compromise and how law enacts control so within those limits people can live freely without fear of being killed for their beliefs or opinions. As Prince Suleiman tells Ezio, "That is why we make [...] a kanun that applies to all in equal measure."
But the honourable Templars were also just a few examples. The AC1 Templars were allied with Al Mualim and were betrayed by him because of their idealism; and Haytham was raised by an Assassin and sought to balance what he learned from Edward and Reginald before his awful life made him an apathetic old man willing to kill his own son. Outside them and Ahmet, the Borgia and Charles Lee were depraved sadists; and Abstergo is power gone amuck, destroying anyone (even children) who oppose them and committing terrible experiments on Daniel and Clay.
