Actually, Connor can pick up, fire and do melee with a musket. I suspect the same with Aveline. No more walking over dead gun-man bodies screaming "IT'S RIGHT THERE! PICK UP THE GUNNNNNN!" Dumb Ezio is Dumb. All he could fire was his lazy Hidden Gun. Not really hidden when you think about it.
