Tulu Pass
Tulu Pass (屠虜關) was a gateway on the northernmost section of the Great Wall of China as it stood during the Qin dynasty.
History[edit | edit source]
Then located in Shang Commandery, in 215 BCE,[1] it was the target of a Xiongnu invasion led by Touman Chanyu in secret collaboration with Yang Duanhe,[2] the Qin officer who commanded the Department of Immortality.[3] They plotted for Duanhe to destroy the gate with explosives, creating a breach in the wall for Touman's army to pour through.[4] Reportedly, the primary objective of the assault was to serve as a diversion that would lure the Qin great general Meng Tian out into a position of vulnerability.[2]
However, the military movement was detected by Touman's son and rival Modu while the sabotage operation was uncovered by two youxia seeking vengeance for Duanhe's recent massacre of their home village, Jade Spring.[2][3] At the Battle of Tulu Pass, the youxia failed to prevent Duanhe from personally blowing up a section of the wall, but they managed to slay him in the fray, defeat the shadowy agent Nie Jing to whom he reported to, and fend off the Xiongnu forces.[4]
